After more than 3 decades the poisoning of Bhopal still goes on

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE DISASTER

It’s nearly 37 years since Union Carbide’s gas and pesticide factory exploded. The company was taken over by Dow Inc but they still haven’t cleared up.
Toxic water from the site spreads further year by year.

Soon after midnight on December 3rd 1984, a highly toxic gas leaked from a Union Carbide pesticide factory in Northern Bhopal.

Locals fled their homes, choked, blinded. By the following day the streets were lined with corpses.

The Bhopal disaster shocked the world. But more than three decades on, the catastrophe continues. Thousands of survivors still suffer the after-effects of gas poisoning. The damage has been passed on in to their children through cancers and malformations.

And the gas leak was not the only source. For years even before the catastrophic gas leak, toxic waste had been dumped on the site and in nearby solar evaporation ponds, poisoning the water supply.

You might write to your financial advisor or pension fund-holder to check whether any of our money is invested in any way in Dow’s shares. Even if you are working with an ethical investment company, which would make this very unlikely, it is worth writing anyway to flag up this issue and your concerns about it.

Why Action for Bhopal?

Our aim

We aim to raise awareness of the aftermath of the massive leak of poisons into the air, soil and water around the former Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) pesticide plant in Bhopal, India since 1984; to press all stakeholders, especially Dow Inc., present-day successors of UCC, to clean up the toxic soil and water.
